The Leyland Cypress Tree

The Leyland Cypress Tree (x cupressocyparis leylandii) grows to be about 60-70 feet in height and 15-20 feet in width at full maturity. If it is amongst others in a row, it gets 20-30 feet in height, and 6 feet in width. It grows at a fast rate of 3-4 feet per year, being most popular for a privacy hedge, windbreaker, and sound barrier. To make the wall, you have to plant each individual tree about 6 feet apart to allow room for growth. Also you want to plant them at the right time, which would be size weeks before the first frost sets in. Make a hole about twice the height and width of the root bed, and pack the soil tightly. Make sure it is in a spot where it can get its recommended amount of full to partial sun. It is classified among the conifer evergreens being how it contains seed in the cones instead of by a flower, and also the fact how it stays one color of dark green all year round.

Leyland Cypress is a hybrid of both the Alaskan cedar and Monterey Cypress with attractive needles turning blue-green at full maturity. The needles are green and pointed with a soft feather texture feel to them. They can be pruned to any shape and size desired depending on the individual tree, but if you decide not to, it will keep a uniform, symmetrical shape commonly referred to as the Christmas tree. They contain a rather pleasing fragrant aroma when the needles are broken.

Being able to tolerate salt and drought, is one of its many exciting features, others being that it can tolerate many soils like sand to clay. A resistance to many insects, diseases, and deer is another important one. To help it further in resisting such things along with stress, you need to give it exceptional care by fertilizing, watering, and pruning. By pruning it does a great deal of many things like promoting stronger growth and minimizing snow and ice damage. It also improves the tree’s structure, vigor, and lifespan. The ideal month to do this would be in July, and also be sure to mulch the bed, and at the same time ridding it of any weeds immediately as these are threats to the well being of the tree.

If the tree happens to experience any dead, broken, or diseased branches, you will wont to remove and dispose of them since they can cause a decaying-fungi that can end up infecting other parts of the wood. Just like many other trees, this one is susceptible to a number of diseases and pests. Seiridium canker, cercospora needle blight, root rot, and botryosphaeria canker are a few of the common diseases. Pests include bagworms, bark beetles, cypress weevil, spruce spider mite, and spittlebug. A good pesticide will help with these issues.
